Five years ago, I was stuck in a nine-to-five job that I didn't particularly like. My relationship with my daughter and my husband was suffering because I was so stressed -and most of the time, pissed off - after coming home from work. Everything around me felt like it was crumbling but good thing I found my lifesaver - a life coach.
At first, I found the idea of a life coach a bit ridiculous. I have heard from some friends about getting one but I just didn't find the idea of someone telling me what to do appealing in any way. But when I found myself losing more and more patience with my current job and just completely miserable - and seeing how miserable my family was as well, I decided to give it a try.
My telephone conversation with my life coach was a bit awkward for me at first. I didn't know what I was supposed to say and I thought that doing it through the phone seemed a bit impersonal. I thought, "How could this person actually help me when she is miles away?" But amazingly, my life coach was warm and welcoming and I just found myself sharing more and more about me. From then on, I was able to actually take definite, positive steps towards achieving my goals. I figured out what was stopping me from doing what I wanted. Actually, I figured out what I wanted from what I thought I was supposed to want.
A life coach may seem ridiculous to some but for working moms like me and probably for people who play different roles in life, finding a coach is a practical, reasonable decision. A life coach allows you to first dissect your current troubles. Are you having problems at work? What is causing those problems? Or, are you having difficulties with your child? What are you or are you not communicating to her? By first getting to the root of your problems, a coach allows you to get a better perspective on things.
My life coach also helped me find a solution to my problems, helped me map out the steps that I should take towards achieving my goals. The fact that I was part of the process of finding a solution, rather than just having received a certain set of instructions, actually helped me feel good about myself. I realize that I could actually figure out things on my own - though with a little help from my coach.
Bottomline: a life coach is not just someone who's there to give you instructions about how to lead your life. He or she is a person who empowers you so that you can make your own good, informed decisions in life.
